Southern State Community College becomes partner in Ohio Semiconductor Collaboration Network

The advanced manufacturing curriculum at the college will begin in January 2024.

Southern State Community College has joined the Ohio Semiconductor Collaboration Network, an initiative through Ohio Association of Community College's Success Center. Taking part in this initiative will set up Southern State Community College to take part in the efforts to up the presence of advanced manufacturing graduates in the state.

According to a press release on Southern State Community College’s website, Dr. Erika Goodwin, the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, said, “Southern State is excited to launch its manufacturing curriculum in January 2024 by offering our first course, Introduction to Manufacturing.” She went on to explain that new industries are coming into the area by way of companies like Honda and Intel, and Southern State Community College is pursuing ways to increase the number of workforce ready people to work at these companies.

Students who take advanced manufacturing coursework at Southern State will learn important skills like interpreting 3-D models, using precision measuring tools, and learn about the topic of lean manufacturing. 

Of working with the Ohio Semiconductor Collaboration Network, Ohio Association of Community College's Success Center, and Intel, Dr. Goodwin said, “I have enjoyed working with these groups. Without their support, the course that we are offering on our spring schedule would not be possible.”
