Southern State Community College holding Engineering Department open house Thursday, April 20

Students interested in studying engineering have the chance to get a preview of Southern State Community College’s engineering program at an open house at the school’s Central Campus in Hillsboro.

The Engineering Department at Southern State Community College is holding an open house this Thursday, April 20 from 4-8 p.m. in Hillsboro at the school’s Central Campus.

The open house will work to preview the program to potential students who are considering attending the upcoming fall semester which starts this August. Information about registering for the fall semester can be found here.

Attendees can expect to be able to engage with current students, faculty, and staff of the engineering department. Attendees can also take part in tours of the lab space and classrooms, and have the potential to meet with representatives from four-year transfer partners like Miami University. There will also be information about scholarships.

In an article from The People’s Defender, Associate Professor of Engineering at Southern State Community College, Jim Barnett, talked about the benefits provided by attaining an engineering degree, saying, “One of the best ways to ensure your job is recession-proof is to have a diversified skill set. An engineering degree from SSCC will help ensure your employer (or future employer) that you have the foundation necessary for success. Whether you are 16 or 60, it is never too late to change your future.”

Engineering is a growing field, and a degree can qualify a job seeker for many different careers. Potential jobs activities an engineering degree recipient can expect range from equipment maintenance and operation to designing and analyzing data.

The Vice President of Southern State Community College’s Academic Affairs, Dr. Erika Goodman, was also quoted about the power of an engineering degree, saying that “new industries are moving to the area and now is the perfect time to think about a career in engineering. Southern State’s engineering program could start you on your way to a new profession.”

There are multiple pathways at Southern State for those who are working toward an engineering career. Students will have access to hands-on experience with a wide range of topics such as pneumatics, hydraulics, technical report writing, physics, computer aided manufacturing, DC circuits and devices, AutoCAD, engineering graphics, and more.

“Come visit me on April 20th from 4-8 p.m. I would love the opportunity to show you what your future could look like with an SSCC Engineering degree,” Barnett said.
