Shawnee State University is expanding its Department of Nursing into a School of Nursing as it continues its mission to meet the healthcare and workforce demands of the region.
The Department of Nursing at Shawnee State University is transitioning to the School of Nursing. The new School of Nursing at SSU will be a part of the school’s plan to grow the number of nursing degrees it graduates and focus on helping combat the shortage of healthcare resources in the region.
Dr. Sunil Ahuja, Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Shawnee State University, was quoted in the Portsmouth Daily Times on the move: “Shawnee State University has a long history of preparing future nurses, advancing the profession, and influencing quality of care in hospitals, clinics and facilities throughout our service area. Our tradition of excellence in nursing education pre-dates our transition to a four-year university, with our first class of nursing students accepted in 1969.”
Shawnee State University has worked to respond to the needs of the region when it comes to the healthcare workforce. The school has expanded the program from an associate degree in nursing to adding several paths, such as the LPN to RN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and the RN to BSN program. The university will continue to respond to industry demand for nurses with the School of Nursing. It is making plans for even more pathways for students to become nurses, as well as advanced degrees like a Master of Science in Nursing, and accelerated degrees.
Provost Ahuja spoke more on the school’s partnerships with other entities, saying, “Working with local, regional, and state providers, the School of Nursing will expand our reach and influence on the nursing shortage and the profession. The establishment of this School represents an elevation of nursing programs at the university, an opportunity for enhanced enrollments in nursing programs and exemplifies a significant addition to SSU’s academic portfolio to serve the students and the region.”
Shawnee State University has a wide range of possibilities for students who are interested in starting their nursing education, or nurses who are already licensed, and are looking to advance in their careers.
