The endowment has been established by Joe and the late Cathi Maynard, the latest in a long line of philanthropy from the Maynards directed at Austin Peay State University.
The JoAnn and Frank Hindsley Endowment has been established at Austin Peay University by Joe and the late Cathi Maynard, in honor of Joe’s mother and stepfather. The endowment will benefit active-duty members of the US Army, or those who have been honorably discharged, who are enrolled full time in an art program, including art, design, music, theatre, or dance.
According to an article on Austin Peay State University’s website, Kris Phillips, who serves as the university’s Vice President for Alumni, Engagement and Philanthropy, was quoted as saying of the Maynards, “The Maynard family’s dedication to Austin Peay is immeasurable. Of course, their charitable contributions benefit our students, programs and facilities, but their presence on campus and advocacy for both APSU and the local community have made a positive impact in both tangible and intangible ways. We are honored to have their support and friendship.”
Joe and Cathi, who passed away in 2023, were named as the university’s 2020 Philanthropists of the Year, following their several donations to the university beginning in 2017, and received the Presidential Medal of Excellence in 2023. Some of the endowments made possible via donations from the Maynards include the Joe and Cathi Maynard Family Fund of Excellence, the Dr. Joe E. Maynard Sr. Education Endowment, the George J. Reed Sr. Veterans Scholarship Endowment, and the John and Frank Hindsley Veterans Endowment. Additionally, the Maynards contributed the largest single gift ever to the Austin Peay State University Athletics Department.
Of this most recent donation, Joe said, “With each of our contributions, my family and I hope to honor a legacy. My mother taught middle school art class for several years, and this fund is a tribute to her time as a teacher, nurturing a creative spirit in her students, as well as Frank’s time in the military.”
Joe Maynard himself is a veteran of the US Army, with most of his military career having been spent as a prime power production specialist with the Corps of Engineers. He, along with Mrs. PJ Maynard, owns JCM Management, Shelby’s Trio Restaurant, the Trio Hospitality Group, CraftPoint Concepts custom millwork, the NHRA Maynard Family Racing Team (JCM Nitro), Queen City Restaurant Equipment, and Wraps and Threads.
In order to qualify for the JoAnn and Frank Hindsley Endowment, students must be active members of the US Army, or have been honorably discharged from the US Army, be a full-time Austin Peay State University student with a GPA of 2.3 or higher, and demonstrate financial need. The student must also be pursuing a degree in an art program like art, design, music, theatre, or dance.
