Macomb Community College introduces Licensed Practical Nurse program

Beginning with the Fall 2025 semester, students will be able to take the one-year certificate program that will help them prepare for the required certification exams to begin working as a licensed practical nurse.

Macomb Community College will begin offering a Licensed Practical Nurse at the start of the Fall 2025 semester, which begins in August. The one-year program will prepare students to take the certification exams they will need to pass in order to work in the entry-level position of an LPN at a hospital, clinic, or physician’s office. The college is offering the program in response to an increased need for healthcare workers to care for the area’s aging population.

According to an article on Macomb Community College’s website, Narine Mirijanian, who serves as the college’s dean of Health and Public Service, was quoted as saying of the necessity of the program, “Through our advisory boards and interactions with our community partners, we have seen the need for licensed practical nurses grow in our community. We are responding by leveraging our state-of-the-art learning center and expert faculty to offer a new program designed to answer that community need.”

An LPN position is an entry-level job which can be an effective starting place for individuals interested in moving further into a healthcare career. Licensed practical nurses work under the supervision of registered nurses and perform healthcare tasks like basic patient care, record keeping, medication distribution, and helping patients perform basic tasks like walking or sitting up.

The program is expected to cost about $12,000, which will include tuition, textbooks, and exam costs. Students will receive lectures, clinical training, simulation training, and lab instruction.

Eva Marie Chmielewski RN, BSN, CEA, who serves as the staff education manager at Martha T. Berry Medical Care Facility in Mount Clemens, said, “Licensed practical nurses are the cornerstone of health care. They provide direct care that is essential to the well-being of our community. Schools of excellence, like Macomb Community College, are essential in providing the training necessary to combine the art of caring and compassion with the skills nurses need. We look forward to continuing and expanding this collaboration.”
