The program will be available beginning with the Fall 2024 semester.
Shawnee State University has added a new program to its Department of Engineering Technologies: a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The program covers a range of topics to help students synthesize information and become proficient in the language of technology.
According to an article on Shawnee State University’s website, Professor Duane Skaggs explained the program and how it’s structured. He said, “This program offers a lot of opportunities for research and problem-solving. It will teach students to identify a problem, design a solution, and then actually build that solution to implementation. Students will get to start researching their very first semester and can build on those skills every single semester. It’s great for students who want to focus on understanding all aspects of a problem.”
The first year of the program will be heavily research focused, with students working to understand algorithms, applications, software development, and related topics. While in the program, students will also be taking many math courses, making it a natural step to also complete a mathematics minor during their time in the program.
Though, Skaggs mentioned, mathematics is not the only thing students will be immersed in. “We have a lot of interdisciplinary ideas in the works too. Those ideas can allow students to be able to make connections between computers to history to chemistry and more,” he added.
The Department of Engineering Technologies already has programs like Digital Simulation & Game Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, and Information Security (Cybersecurity), which is another recent program addition.
Skaggs said, “We’re looking forward to seeing how this program will expand our already large community we have of programmers and engineers on campus.”
