Partnership between University of Akron and Joffrey Ballet School gives dancers unique educational opportunity

Ballet dancers can enroll in both the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School Trainee Program in New York City for dance training and The University of Akron to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance.

The University of Akron and the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City have forged a partnership that will give ballet dancers the best of both worlds: unparalleled professional dance training and instruction in the Joffrey Ballet School Trainee Program and a simultaneous academic dance education from The University of Akron.

According to an article on The University of Akron’s website, Dr. Gwyneth Price, who serves as the senior vice provost for academic and faculty affairs at The University of Akron, was quoted as saying of the benefits of the new partnership, "This partnership represents a significant milestone in the realm of dance education. By combining the artistic excellence of the Joffrey Ballet School with the academic rigor of our institution, we are empowering dancers to realize their full potential and prepare for successful careers both on and off the stage."

This opportunity is available beginning in the Fall 2024 semester to students who are accepted into The University of Akron’s BFA in Dance program and who also successfully audition for the Joffrey Ballet School. Students will reside in New York City at the Joffrey Ballet School to receive their dance training and will simultaneously take online classes within the BFA in Dance program from The University of Akron. They will have access to mentors and instructors from both institutions and will be immersed in the world of dance from both a practical and an academic standpoint. Additionally, students will have access to networking opportunities from both institutions and will have performance opportunities in New York City during their time in the program.

Lee Merwin, the Executive Director of the Joffrey Ballet School, said of the partnership, "This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of dancers and innovators. Together with The University of Akron, we are creating a dynamic learning environment where students can thrive both artistically and academically. Through this program, students will be prepared for careers in fields such as dance, professional choreography, dance education, and dance administration, among others.”

Dr. Marc Reed, the Director of the School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Akron, shared his thoughts, as well, saying, “We are incredibly excited to join forces with one of the premier professional training schools in the country. Both Joffrey and UA dance students will benefit from this partnership, and we look forward to seeing programs from both institutions flourish because of these combined efforts.”
