University of Akron becomes sister university to North High School of Akron Public Schools

The announcement represents an expansion of a longstanding partnership between the university and Akron Public Schools.

The University of Akron and Akron Public Schools have expanded their longstanding partnership. On May 11, 2026, it was announced that the University of Akron has been named the sister university of Akron Public Schools’ North High School. As a sister university, the university will help implement college readiness programming and create a pipeline from the high school to the university.

According to an article on the University of Akron’s website, university President R.J. Nemer was quoted as saying of the partnership, "North High School students are talented future professionals who deserve a clear path to a career, and that path runs right through The University of Akron. These students are the next generation's nurses, engineers, scientists and much more. At UA, we believe the key is to start early, stay connected and make sure students see themselves in higher education before they ever fill out an application. This city is on the rise, and we need these students to recognize their potential role in building what comes next."

The University of Akron and Akron Public Schools have a longstanding relationship, which includes partnerships between the university and NIHF STEM High School, Ellet High School, and Akron Early College. The purpose of the partnerships is to broaden access to college experiences and enhance students’ academic support.

As a new sister university to North High School, the University of Akron will help develop curriculum that includes a focus on career readiness, college admission test preparation programs, summer enrichment experiences, and workshops to help navigate the admissions process. The goal is to prepare students for college and careers and help them navigate the process seamlessly.

Superintendent of Akron Public Schools, Mary Outley, said, “We are grateful for The University of Akron and their commitment to deepen opportunities available to our students. By becoming a sister university  to North High School, we are building on a proven foundation that already supports students at NIHF STEM, Ellet, and Akron Early College. Together, we are creating clearer pathways to college, careers, and long-term success.”

The partnership between the school district and the university was facilitated by the United Way of Summit & Medina, which strengthens the pipeline between high school and education or employment.

Annie McFadden, the President & CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina, said, “We’re proud to serve as the connectors in this work and help create meaningful opportunities for students. By strengthening a partnership between the University of Akron and Akron Public Schools, students can not only explore pathways to advanced curriculum and higher education, but also do so with a nationally ranked university in their own backyard."
