Edison State Community College receives donation to support planned nursing wing addition

The donation comes from the UVMC Community Benefit Fund and will name the new addition the Upper Valley Medical Center/Premier Health Nursing Wing Addition at Edison State Community College.

Edison State Community College has received a donation from Upper Valley Medical Center’s UVMC Community Benefit Fund to advance the planned nursing wing addition to the college’s Piqua Campus. Thanks to the support of the donation, the new nursing wing will be named the Upper Valley Medical Center/Premier Health Nursing Wing Addition at Edison State Community College. With this newest donation, the college has reached $4.1 million of the needed $4.5 million to fund the project, and the college is actively exploring and forming partnerships to support the project.

According to an article on Edison State Community College’s website, Dr. Chris Spradlin, the president of the college, expressed his gratitude for the donation. He is quoted as saying, “Edison State is tremendously grateful for the gift provided by the UVMC Community Benefit Fund in support of our nursing wing addition. The impacts of this donation will be far-reaching. It will allow our nursing faculty and staff to serve students in a state-of-the-art learning environment; it will provide our nursing students with an ideal space to attend classes, practice their clinical skills, and collaborate with each other on their educational journeys; and it will allow us to expand both our associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing. Ultimately, the donation will help to improve the lives of community members by providing them with outstanding health care close to home. Edison State has a long history of strong collaboration with Premier Health and Upper Valley Medical Center specifically, and we are excited to see the next stage in this partnership take shape. Working together, we will help students to achieve their educational goals and realize their dreams.”

In 2024, the college received approval from the Higher Learning Commission to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, giving registered nurses the option to continue their nursing education at the college. With this approval, the college has embarked on the journey to strengthen the region’s nursing pipeline. The Upper Valley Medical Center/Premier Health Nursing Wing Addition at Edison State Community College will expand the college’s capacity for training nurses to enter into the workforce.

Construction is expected to begin in August 2026 and be ready for students by the Fall 2027 semester.

Kevin Harlan, who serves as the president of UVMC, said, “Upper Valley Medical Center is proud to continue our longstanding partnership with Edison State. For decades, our organizations have worked side by side to strengthen the region’s health care workforce, and this investment reflects our shared commitment to educating and training high-quality nurses. By supporting the expansion of Edison State’s nursing wing, we are helping ensure that students have the advanced learning environment they need to excel—ultimately benefiting patients, families, and the entire community we serve.”
