Bluegrass Community and Technical College to launch Additive Technology Program

The new program will prepare students for careers in additive engineering and is launching at the college’s Georgetown-Scott County Campus.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College has a new program offering that will help students prepare for careers in the growing additive engineering field. The Additive Technology Program will award students an Associate in Applied Science degree and will guide individuals through classroom learning, hands-on experiences, and the opportunity to specialize in specific fields through elective course sequences.

According to an article on Bluegrass Community and Technical College’s website, Kevin Griffis, who serves as the Program Coordinator for Additive Technology, was quoted as saying of the new program, “Additive manufacturing is transforming how industries design, create, and produce. This program gives students the opportunity to be at the forefront of that transformation. By learning advanced additive techniques and applying them in real-world projects, our students will graduate ready to make an immediate impact in the workforce.”

Throughout the program, students will have the opportunity to learn with hands-on experiences with different additive technologies, like extrusion-based 3D printing, UV curing, and G Code structure. It will also explore the role of artificial intelligence in additive engineering. Students will also learn about material selection, process optimization, safety, and post-processing techniques.

Additionally, students will be able to select elective courses that will help them specialize their skills for a specific career path, with options that will correspond to futures in business, filmmaking, automotive, computer technology, or healthcare. These courses will give students nine credit hours of specific skills for their future career paths, in addition to the foundational additive engineering skills and knowledge they will receive.

Dr. Greg Feeney, the President and CEO of Bluegrass Community and Technical College, said, “BCTC is committed to supporting workforce growth and innovation. The Additive Technology Program represents our commitment to providing students with the tools and education needed to excel in emerging industries. This program not only supports local and regional workforce needs but also empowers our students to become creators, problem solvers, and innovators.”
