The Rucks have given the university a $50,000 planned gift to support future educators, especially those who are studying history.
The University of Evansville has a new endowed scholarship to support students who plan to be teachers. The Carol (Umbach) and Gerald Rucks Endowed Scholarship Fund for Education Students has been established with a $50,000 planned gift from the late Gerald Rucks and Carol Umbach Rucks, who was a 1964 University of Evansville graduate.
According to an article on the University of Evansville’s website, university president Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz was quoted as saying of the gift, "Carol and Jerry Rucks understood the power of education to shape lives, communities, and futures. Through their generous gift, they are creating a lasting impact that will inspire students to lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and carry forward the spirit of changemaking that defines the University of Evansville."
Carol Rucks earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the university in 1964. She spent her career as an educator and a reading specialist in Illinois. Gerald was a US Army veteran and also served as a teacher and participated in the community. The couple enjoyed 50 years of marriage together. After their retirement, they moved to Arizona.
The Carol (Umbach) and Gerald Rucks Endowed Scholarship Fund for Education Students will be awarded to students who plan to become educators, with preference given to students who are also studying history and have a history of community service endeavors.
