The new agreement includes simultaneous admission to both institutions, as well as a permanent Northern Michigan University satellite office on campus at Gogebic Community College.
Gogebic Community College and Northern Michigan University have partnered to form a seamless transfer pathway to expand access to earning a bachelor degree for more students. The agreement includes simultaneous admission, meaning students will be enrolled at both institutions concurrently, and will establish a satellite office for Northern Michigan University on Gogebic Community College’s campus.
According to an article on Gogebic Community College’s website, Lucas Abromowitz, who serves as the senior associate director of transfer recruitment management in Northern Michigan University’s Admissions Department, explained the process and its details. He is quoted as saying, “Students who apply for admission to GCC will be offered an option to participate in the Direct Admission Program. A student is not obligated to transfer to Northern by participating. Direct admission from GCC to NMU allows transfer students to indicate an early intention to transfer, streamlining their transition and improving their chances of degree attainment at both institutions.”
The Direct Admission Program is intended to make it simpler for students to transfer to a four year institution after attending Gogebic Community College and continue their education. The goal for the schools is to retain more transfer students and increase transfer student graduation rates.
When students are accepted into Gogebic Community College, they will have the option to indicate their interest in the Direct Admission Program without obligation. If they do choose to move forward with the program, they will be admitted into Northern Michigan University toward the end of their GCC journey. The benefits of the program include students being able to access the resources of both campuses, leading to a stronger support network and community connection opportunities. Students will be able to access advising, the library, community events, and other student support resources.
Karen Ball, who is GCC’s Interim Dean of Occupational Programs and the Registrar, said of the opportunity, “We are thrilled about this opportunity for our students at GCC. These strong partnerships cultivate success for our graduates and we look forward to watching students take advantage of this great opportunity.”
