Trine University partners with area emergency medical service providers for training opportunities

The collaboration will see employees of local emergency medical service providers receiving additional specialized hands-on training from the university’s faculty within the university’s classrooms and laboratories.

Trine University’s Brooks College of Health Professions has partnered with the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority and the Fort Wayne Fire Department Emergency Medical Service to provide additional hands-on training for their employees. Brooks College of Health Professions faculty will provide employees of these organizations with supplemental training on topics like intravenous access, advanced cardiac life support, and airway management, within the BCHP laboratory and classroom facilities.

According to an article on Trine University's website, Lisa Clemens, DMSc, PA-C, who serves as the dean of the Brooks College of Health Professions, was quoted as saying of the collaboration, “By leveraging the expertise of frontline responders and the state-of-the-art facilities at Trine University’s Brooks College of Health Professions, this education partnership aims to ensure the high quality of pre-hospital care provided to Fort Wayne-area residents. Training opportunities not only sharpen technical proficiency, but also build confidence for critical, time-sensitive situations.”

Faculty members who are experienced EMS providers will be the ones overseeing the training for the organizations. Participants in the training will utilize the university’s Simulated Patient Care Center, which is a high-tech simulation of an emergency room, patient care rooms, and a surgery suite.

Sandra Lewison, who serves as the clinical director for Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, said, "TRAA is excited to be partnering with Trine University and the use of their state-of-the-art training faculty to receive hands-on medical training for our employees. With this partnership, our employees get to learn new skills in person with experienced providers, which improves confidence levels and provides better care for our community."

The university as well as both participating EMS organizations believe the partnership will be beneficial for area residents, who may someday be on the receiving end of emergency medical services that were taught during the training sessions.

Cody Brooks, the assistant chief EMS for the Fort Wayne Fire Department, said, “This collaboration allows us to enhance our skills and deepen our understanding of anatomy as we continue to deliver high-quality care. The experience with Brooks College has been outstanding, providing us with a wealth of opportunities for growth and development.”
