University of Charleston launches new Artificial Intelligence major

The new major falls under the umbrella of the Applied Computer Science degree and is one of five majors in the program students can choose to focus on. The new major launches with the Fall 2025 semester.

The University of Charleston is introducing a new major within its Applied Computer Science degree program. Beginning with the Fall 2025 semester, students can now choose to major in Artificial Intelligence, the program’s newest offering that joins established majors Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Technology Applications, and Video Game Development.

According to an article on the University of Charleston’s website, the university’s president, Marty Roth, was quoted as saying of the new addition, “We are proud to launch a program that will prepare our students to lead in the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence. Our graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to drive innovation and lead in a wide range of industries shaped by artificial intelligence. This program represents an exciting step forward for UC as we empower the next generation of leaders to thrive in an AI-driven world.”

The Applied Computer Science program’s webpage states that the Artificial Intelligence major “equips students with the knowledge and skills to develop intelligent systems to analyze, predict, and optimize complex problems,” and that “Students gain hands-on experience, and an understanding of the ethical considerations surrounding AI.”

Dr. Vincent Smith, who serves as the Program Director of Computer Science and Data Analytics, said, “Our new AI major is designed to prepare students not only to use AI, but to understand and shape its future. We emphasize ethical development, real-world applications, and interdisciplinary collaboration—ensuring our graduates are not just tech-savvy, but thoughtful, well-rounded problem-solvers ready to innovate across industries.”
