According to an article on Davenport University’s website, Richard J. Pappas, who serves as the university’s president, explained why the university signed on to the scholarship program. He is quoted as saying, “Davenport University has a long history of partnering with top employers to invest in their most important asset – their employees. There’s a talent shortage in Michigan, especially in health care, so it’s critical for organizations like Mary Free Bed to grow talent from within. This scholarship program is designed to take the financial burden off working adults so they can continue their education at Davenport.”

The scholarship program is applicable to both employees of Mary Free Bed and to the family members of those employees, and according to the scholarship program’s webpage, the scholarships are applicable toward any major, and provides scholarship funds on a rolling scale depending on how many credit hours an individual will be taking. The scholarship caps at $8,000 per Mary Free Bed employee and $6,500 for family members of Mary Free Bed employees. The opportunity is available for up to 50 Mary Free Bed employees. A further perk of the scholarship program is that those who take part are also eligible for 20% off the cost of professional development programs at Davenport University’s Institute for Professional Excellence.

The CEO of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation, Kent Riddle, was quoted as saying of the opportunity Mary Free Bed can offer to its employees thanks to the scholarship program, “At Mary Free Bed, our staff truly are the heart and soul of our organization. We’re incredibly grateful for this partnership and the advanced education Davenport has to offer our team members. By empowering staff with opportunities to grow, we’re also investing in outstanding care that restores hope and reignites the spirit of our patients.”
