Cleveland State Community College names Dr. Corey Campbell new Vice President for Academic Affairs

Cleveland State Community College has appointed Dr. Corey Campbell to be the new Vice President for Academic Affairs. He has worked in academia for over 15 years.

Dr. Corey Campbell has been named the new Vice President for Academic Affairs at Cleveland State Community College. He was previously the Vice President for Student Engagement and Retention for three years at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, New York before joining the team at Cleveland State. Dr. Campbell’s predecessor was Dr. Barsha Pickell, who left the position to return to being a classroom instructor.

President Dr. Ty Stone of Cleveland State was quoted by the Chattanoogan on the appointment of Dr. Campbell, saying, “I am excited Dr. Campbell is joining our leadership team at Cleveland State. He has a strong track record of success and was overwhelmingly selected by the campus community. His experience in academics as well as student affairs brings a unique perspective. I look forward to the great things that we will accomplish at Cleveland State under Dr. Campbell's leadership.”

Dr. Campbell has a master’s degree in Sport Management. He started his education career as a coordinator for the executive fitness program at Northwood University in Florida, and was an instructor there, as well. He also was the Assistant Director of Student Affairs at Nova Southeastern University and the Director of Fitness Technology and Sports Medicine at Keiser University in Florida. Dr. Campbell’s career was influenced by his background in sports management from a global perspective. He talked about this mindset, saying, “Sport is a global phenomenon and business, much like education. I have taught sport management related courses and completed multiple proposals for business expansion within the sport and fitness industry.”

He earned his doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and then went on to be promoted to Dean of Academic Affairs, and then to Dean of Students at Keiser University. From there, Dr. Campbell moved on to Jefferson Community College where he was named one of the 20 under 40 Northern New York Emerging Leaders.

“My previous work with academic affairs and student affairs gives me a holistic perspective of student needs within and outside of the classroom. I am proud of the lasting relationships I’ve established with students and colleagues over the years,” said Dr. Campbell of his more than 15 years working in higher education.

The role of the Vice President for Academic Affairs is to serve as the college’s Chief Academic Officer, and to oversee the teaching faculty, deans, and academic divisions of the school. The Vice President for Academic Affairs is also a member of the president’s senior staff; as such, Dr. Campbell will work to provide the administrative leadership of the college with support.

Dr. Campbell is originally from Miami, Florida, where he earned both a bachelor of science and a master of science from the University of Florida. He is also a Hall of Fame inductee there. Dr. Campbell is married and has two children. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, bowling, exercising, and watching his favorite teams, the Chicago Bulls, the Florida Gators, and the Detroit Lions.

“Cleveland State has a great working environment with skilled professionals who care about student success, and I look forward to working with and getting to know the campus community,” said Dr. Campbell.
