Baker College showcased its resources for transfer students such as scholarships and affordability options during National Transfer Student week in mid October.
Baker College is celebrating both Michigan College Month and National Transfer Student Week this fall, and using these celebrations to reaffirm its goal of providing students with pathways to higher education degrees and certifications in a way that is both affordable and accessible. One of the ways Baker is looking to do so is by highlighting the resources it makes available to its students who are looking to keep earning credits at another college or university after finishing their time at Baker.
Students who are looking to transfer schools tend to have many concerns about cost, retaining their earned credits, housing, and how long it will take for them to finish earning their degree. Financial advisors at Baker College work to support a range of affordability initiatives by looking at every available state and federal aid, work experience, and transferable credits in order to ensure an affordable education solution that fits the budget of these transfer students. Baker College also offers a housing scholarship at its Port Huron, Cadillac, and Owosso campuses. This scholarship pays for half of the costs associated with housing for the first two years of a student’s time at the school, and a quarter of the costs in the third year. This extra support allows for eligible students to live on campus for a more thorough collegiate experience.
Starting in October, some Michigan colleges have also participated in the free application month program. Baker College never charges an application fee for either its on campus or its online classes.
In an article posted on Baker’s website, Linda Katrinic, who serves as Vice President of Financial Aid at the school, talked about the rationale for its support of transfer students, saying, “Students don’t always take a straight-line path through higher education, and transferring is an important part of that journey for many students. Baker is focused on meeting students where they are and providing accessible pathways that help them continue moving toward their educational and career goals.”
Students going into college can earn a variety of scholarships. Baker offers a range of transfer scholarships, and award as much as $9000 per year for as many as four years. There are also options for students who have different educational and academic backgrounds. One such is Baker College’s Bright Futures Scholarship for students who first attended college over five years previously. Baker College also offers a Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship for eligible members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society,
Katrinic went on to talk about the value of transfer students, saying, “Transfer students bring experience, credits, and goals they’ve already started building, and our job is to help them turn that experience into their next step. We want students to have a clear understanding of the financial resources available to them so they can make informed decisions about continuing their education.”
Baker College decided to use National Transfer Student week to showcase the resources it makes available to students who are using a transfer pathway as a means to continue their higher education journey.
