Sinclair Community College has received a $3,233,724 federal grant that will support student parents throughout their time at the school. The funding comes via the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education through the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program. The grant will assist the college in providing student parents with affordable childcare so they can focus on their studies.
According to an article on Sinclair Community College’s website, Dr. Jessica Minor, who serves as the Chair of the Education Department, was quoted as saying of the grant funding, “The CCAMPIS grant is transformational for Sinclair and The Hope Center for Families. It removes a major barrier for our student-parents by making high-quality, affordable childcare possible, so they can stay in school, complete their programs, and build brighter futures for their families.”
The funding will provide $1.8 million in direct childcare subsidies to low-income, Pell-eligible student-parents who are enrolled at Sinclair Community College as a degree-seeking student. These student parents will be able to receive subsidized childcare at the Early Childhood Education Center at Sinclair Community College’s Dayton campus and at Mini University at the Hope Center for Families.
In addition to the subsidies, the grant funding will also allow the college to hire a Student Success Coach who will help student parents who are not receiving the subsidies to find alternative childcare resources, public funding, and other campus and community services. The funding will also allow the school to increase its staff hours to assist in these efforts.
The new round of CCAMPIS funding is a 46% increase over the last round of funding Sinclair Community College received, representing the ability to enhance student parent support even more. The school is the only in the state of Ohio to have received this funding, and its total funding amount for this cycle is the third largest in the nation.
Dr. Steve Johnson, the President & CEO at Sinclair Community College, said, "This reflects a strong proposal, an incredible Grants team, the support of leadership, and our shared commitment to removing barriers for student-parents. We are incredibly proud of what we accomplished together and even more excited about what this investment will allow us to do for Sinclair students and their families over the next four years."
This funding runs from October 2026 to September 2030. It is expected that the program at Sinclair will support 200 student parents per year for each of the four years, as well as 114 children each year with direct childcare subsidies.
