Macomb Community College unveils new Fire Apparatus Building

The new Fire Apparatus Building at Macomb Community College opened on Monday, June 15, and will serve as a home base for training new firefighters at the college.

On Monday, June 15, Macomb Community College celebrated the opening of its new Fire Apparatus Building. The building is located at the school’s Public Service Institute in Clinton Township. In attendance at the unveiling were Rep. Denise Mentzer of the Michigan House of Representatives and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, as well as Macomb President James O. Sawyer IV to officiate the program. Back in October of 2024, Mentzer and Hackel had rappelled down the Public Service Institute's live burn tower as part of a celebration of a $2 million state appropriation. Mentzer was a large force in securing that appropriation, which was a significant portion of the $3.5 million Fire Apparatus Building project.

In an article posted on Macomb Community College’s website, director of Macomb’s Public Service Institute, Michael Lopez, was quoted about the new building, saying, “This modern apparatus building is a superb home base for the firefighter training Macomb Community College provides as a regional training center. The new facility will better prepare Macomb’s fire academy students by providing real-world experience of working in a fire station while also enhancing the training we offer to fire department teams from local municipalities.”

The new building is 3,500 square feet, and houses equipment firefighters use daily, as well as an aerial ladder fire truck, and a fire engine truck. The facility shares a layout similar to the stations where Macomb’s fire cadets work.

Macomb Community College works to prepare students for careers in emergency medical services as well as firefighting with a large range of degree programs, including part-time and 10-week fire academies. These programs allow students to obtain the necessary practical skills needed to pass Michigan’s state certification exams. Macomb serves as a regional training center as well, offering advanced training and development for current fire service professionals.
