The donation comes from the Marion County Quick Response Team and will provide a safe and supportive environment for the campus community.
Pierpont Community and Technical College has received a donation of naloxone products from the Marion County Quick Response Team to provide a safe and supportive environment for the campus community. Naloxone products help individuals experiencing a narcotics overdose to recover, effectively reversing the effects of the overdose. The donation includes 14 Narcan nasal spray kits and four ONEbox emergency opioid overdose reversal kits.
According to an article on Pierpont Community and Technical College’s website, Dr. Michael Waide, the college’s interim president, was quoted as saying of the donation and the effects it will have on the campus community, “At Pierpont, our responsibility to our students extends beyond the classroom. We are dedicated to providing a safe, supportive environment where every individual can thrive. By integrating these lifesaving resources into our campus safety infrastructure, we are taking a proactive stance in protecting our community. This partnership with the Marion County QRT is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to prioritize health and safety.”
Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a safe and effective medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, and is not harmful to anyone who takes it when not having an opioid overdose. These products are useful to have in emergency recovery kits and first aid kits, particularly in public spaces. These kits, donated by the Marion County Quick Response Team, will be utilized by all four of Pierpont Community and Technical College’s campuses.
The Marion County Quick Response Team is operated by the Marion County Health Department and provides outreach, training, and naloxone distribution.
Malissa White, who serves as a peer recovery coach for the Marion County QRT, explained the importance of this work, saying, “You cannot choose recovery if you aren’t here to make the choice. We distribute naloxone because we believe in second chances, and saving a life today is the only way to make recovery possible tomorrow.”
