Arthur D. Karlin Endowed Chair in Accounting established at University of Akron

The endowed chair was established via a $6.7 million estate gift from Hildegard Karlin in memory of her husband, a University of Akron School of Law alumnus and former faculty member.

The University of Akron has a new endowed chair position thanks to an estate gift from Hildegard Karlin, in memory of her husband Arthur D. Karlin, a University of Akron School of Law alumnus and former faculty member. The $6.7 million gift has established the Arthur D. Karlin Endowed Chair in Accounting, which will benefit the university’s College of Business and the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy by attracting top talent for faculty as well as for students.

According to an article on the University of Akron’s website, R.J. Nemer, who serves as the president of the university, was quoted as saying of the gift and Karlin’s legacy, “Arthur Karlin’s innovative approach monumentally transformed accounting education at The University of Akron and beyond. Under his guidance and instruction, leading tax professionals learned the craft that shaped regional corporate accountancy. The endowed chair is a fitting tribute that extends the unequivocal legacy of this committed educator.”

The university’s master’s degree program in Taxation, which is an online program, is nationally ranked and is currently experiencing a boom in interest and enrollment. Arthur Karlin was instrumental in establishing the Master of Taxation program in 1979.

Jules Jones, the director and professor of practice in the School of Accountancy, said, “Now in its 46th year, the program is proud of its passionate, well-connected and supportive alumni network. This generous gift creates opportunities to strengthen our program and expand the impact of our graduates, while continuing to honor Art’s legacy.”

Arthur Karlin graduated from the university’s School of Law in 1976 and also taught at the university from 1971 to 1993. Throughout his time at the university, he displayed a passion for teaching and for helping students succeed. In Arthur’s memory, the new Karlin Chair position will be awarded to a faculty member who holds a similar passion for education and who shows excellence in scholarship.

Arthur Karlin passed away in 2018 and Hildegard Karlin passed away in 2024.
