Southern State Community College partners with Highland County Democratic Party for scholarship opportunity

The Highland County Democratic Party approached the Southern State Community College Foundation with the idea of supporting a student who wishes to develop leadership skills to improve the Highland County community.

Southern State Community College students have a new scholarship opportunity to apply for thanks to the Highland County Democratic Party. The Party approached the Southern State Community College Foundation with the desire to provide financial support for a student who is passionate about improving the Highland County community and wishes to develop the leadership skills to do so.

According to a press release on Southern State Community College’s website, Dr. Nicole Rhoades, the college’s president, was quoted as saying, “On behalf of the Southern State Foundation, we appreciate the generosity of the Highland County Democratic Party as well as their conviction for supporting future leaders. It has been a pleasure working with this group as they have thoughtfully considered how to best leverage this opportunity to support our community and our students.”

The Highland County Democratic Party is a group of residents who want to ensure a more just future for everyone in America, starting with those from their own county. As a result of their desire to improve the community, the group has established the Highland County Democratic Club Scholarship. Students interested in the scholarship must submit an application, including an essay that demonstrates their understanding of how the government is responsive to citizens. Students must also include in their essay an example of how a governmental organization was responsive to them personally or to someone they know.

Dinah Phillips, chairperson of the Highland County Democratic Party, said, “Our Highland Democratic Party is excited to begin our connection with Southern State Community College. We hope that this small scholarship will be impactful to one student this year and that we can grow our commitment to more students in the future. Education can be the road to independence for many people and we are grateful for the excellent opportunities provided by having SSCC in our community.”
