The fully online program will be available beginning with the Fall 2025 semester and has been designed to help meet the growing demand for health information management professionals in the region.
Youngstown State University is launching a new online program with the start of the Fall 2025 semester. The Associate of Science in Health Information degree program has been created to meet the needs of the local workforce and will prepare students for careers such as health information technician, medical records analyst, or coding specialist, among others.
According to an article on Youngstown State University’s website, Sara Michaliszyn, who serves as the dean of the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, was quoted as saying of the new program, “This program was developed with a clear purpose: to prepare students for the future of healthcare. We’re combining flexible online learning with certification preparation, applied learning and career-aligned pathways. It’s a comprehensive approach to supporting the next generation of health information professionals.”
The program is ideal for anyone to use as a stepping stone into the healthcare industry or into further healthcare education, including recent high school graduates, adult learners, and individuals who are already working.
Students in the program will receive foundational knowledge as well as the opportunity for hands-on practical experiences. Students will prepare for various certification exams, including the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), and Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). The program includes a practicum experience and students will be able to earn stackable credentials like medical scribe and coding certificates.
