University of Charleston receives gift to fund international student scholarships

The gift comes via the estate of Frances and Richard Rumley, both graduates of the school that would become the University of Charleston.

The University of Charleston has received a donation from the estate of Frances and Richard Rumley to fund scholarships for international students who wish to study at the university. The $50,000 gift will establish a fund that will make it possible for more international students to enroll at the university, which currently hosts around 200 international students.

According to an article on the University of Charleston’s website, university President Marty Roth was quoted as saying of the gift, “This generous gift will open doors for our international students in ways that Frances and Richard would have loved. Their passion for connecting with people from around the world will live on through this scholarship, helping students pursue their dreams here at UC. We are incredibly grateful for their support and the lasting impact they continue to have on our university community.”

The Rumleys both attended and graduated from Morris Harvey College, the school that would become the University of Charleston, and spent their lives together with a passion for international travel and for assisting with international students at the University of Charleston, even offering their home as a place for the students to stay.

The university’s Vice President of Development Gail Carter said, “This scholarship will make a real difference, easing financial burdens and giving more international students the chance to call UC home. Thanks to this incredible generosity, Frances and Richard will continue to shape the lives of students from around the world. Gifts like these are very special to the University of Charleston, and Frances and Richard set a wonderful example of the impact alumni can make by giving back to their beloved alma mater.”
