The grant will support the establishment of the college’s Student Resilience Center, which will help students with basic needs and mental health support.
Sinclair Community College has received a Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program grant from the US Department of Education in the amount of $900,000. The grant will fund the establishment of the Student Resilience Center, which will be an offering of the school’s Accessibility Services Department. The Student Resilience Center will provide students with additional resources, such as help to meet their basic needs, and assistance with mental health support.
According to an article on Sinclair Community College’s website, Dr. Lorrie Spivey, PsyD, NCC, LPC, who serves as the Manager of Accessibility Services, was quoted as saying of the grant funding, “As Program Director of the project, I am elated that Sinclair has been chosen as an awardee of the Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students U.S. Department of Education grant. In alignment with Sinclair's mission, this grant will enable us to expand upon current services and address the essential needs of our students, while empowering them through resilience and building opportunities.”
The grant funding will be allocated over the next three years and will allow the Student Resilience Center to provide additional types of support to students. The funding will support the hiring of additional counseling staff to help meet student needs, the establishment of additional peer support groups, and the ability to direct students to on-campus and off-campus mental health resources.
