The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor to the North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership, a consortium of community colleges in Ohio, of which Owens Community College is part. The grant will support advanced manufacturing training.
Owens Community College is one of five community colleges in Ohio involved in the North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership, which has received a US Department of Labor Strengthening Community Colleges Training grant in the amount of $5.7 million. Along with Lorain County Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Terra State Community College, and North Central State Community College Owens Community College will be able to use the funding to strengthen the advanced manufacturing training available via the North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership.
According to an article on Owens Community College’s website, Dan Burklo, who serves as the college’s dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, was quoted as saying, “We’re excited to see the impact the North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership can make in Ohio. By helping Owens continue to educate the future workforce, this partnership will keep Ohio as one of the nation’s leaders in advanced manufacturing.”
The state of Ohio is experiencing a rapidly growing need for individuals to fill roles in the advanced manufacturing industry. The North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership is working toward filling those open jobs by providing people with the kind of training that will prepare them to work in the industry, including earn-and-learn opportunities. Each of the five members of the North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership has committed to training 175 students to become qualified and efficient advanced manufacturing workers.
The North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership also aims to help individuals in underserved communities become trained to fill these positions, as well, which are often high-paying jobs.
Through partnerships with institutions like the Ohio Technical Skills Innovation Network, the Ohio Association of Community Colleges, and the Ohio Manufacturer’s Association, the North Shore Manufacturing Workforce Partnership is working to train and prepare students for futures in the industry.
