The Rho Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Alumni Association made the decision to convert a recent gift they gave to Austin Peay State University into an endowment to benefit the university’s students.
Austin Peay State University has a new endowment for student scholarships, thanks to the generous decision of the Rho Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Alumni Association to convert its recent gift to the university into an endowed scholarship fund for students.
According to an article on Austin Peay State University’s website, Omega Psi Phi alumni LaVar Jamison was quoted as saying of the organization’s decision and the motivation behind it, “This scholarship embodies the fraternity's mission to empower students to achieve academic success and become leaders in their communities, whether it's work, school, church, or home. We are thrilled to support the academic endeavors of Austin Peay State University students." He added, “It is our aim to always uphold our second Cardinal Principle of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., which is scholarship. APSU has given so much to so many and helped us develop lives that would not have been possible without the friendships and education we received while enrolled at Austin Peay. Because of this we wanted to leave a legacy that ensured the next generation had the ability to enjoy the same enriching experience as we did at the Peay.”
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization that was founded at a historically Black college. Founded at Howard University in 1911, its Cardinal Principles are Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift.
In order for students to qualify for the scholarship endowment set up by Rho Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Alumni Association, students must have at least a 2.75 GPA and be sophomores at Austin Peay State University. They must also demonstrate financial need, and preference will be given to African American students.
Austin Peay State University’s Vice President for Alumni, Engagement, and Philanthropy Kris Phillips was quoted as saying, "The greatest legacy to leave behind is one of helping others, and we thank the brothers of the Rho Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Alumni Association for making that their legacy.”
