Student Leadership Academy established at Dyersburg State Community College

The President’s Student Leadership Academy is a nine-month program designed to foster leadership skills and cultural development within faculty-selected students.

Dyersburg State Community College has recently launched the President’s Student Leadership Academy, a program that will help students become strong leaders by developing their skills and enriching their cultural understanding to equip them for leadership roles.

According to an article on Dyersburg State Community College’s website, Dr. Scott Cook, the president of the school, explained his reasoning for launching the program, and what participants can expect from the experience. He is quoted as saying, “I am excited to launch the President’s Student Leadership Academy at Dyersburg State Community College. This program, which launched with its first class in August, teaches students about leadership and their leadership styles, provides access to college and community leaders, and teaches them valuable lessons about leading and working with others. Dyersburg State is committed to shaping future leaders, and this experience is designed to empower them with confidence and the vision to become the next generation of great leaders, to meet the challenges of the future, and to have a lasting impact on our communities.”

In order to join the President’s Student Leadership Academy, a student must be recommended by a faculty member, or, if choosing to apply on their own, a student must obtain a recommendation letter from a faculty member or school staff. Faculty members have been encouraged to identify and recommend students who either already exhibit leadership talents or those who have potential to become leaders with sufficient training. Ten students are in this inaugural cohort of the PSLA, which held its first meeting in August.

Throughout the nine-month program, the students will be able to participate in many activities and opportunities that will expand their understanding of leadership. Students will have access to many campus leaders as well as receive lessons in communication, social media etiquette, and conflict resolution. The students will also participate in a group project and presentation at the end of the program.

Julie Griggs, the Student Life Committee Chair, shared her enthusiasm for the new program, saying, “I’m excited for the countless number of DSCC students that will benefit from this incredible opportunity now and in the future. As they learn, they share their knowledge with others, and the benefits simply keep rolling from there.”
