University of Mount Union to begin offering two new artificial intelligence programs

Artificial Intelligence and Applied Artificial Intelligence minors will be available for students at the University of Mount Union beginning in the Fall 2024 semester.

The University of Mount Union has launched two new artificial intelligence programs that students may select as their minors beginning in the upcoming Fall 2024 semester. The Artificial Intelligence program will give student technician knowledge in the realm of artificial intelligence, and the Applied Artificial Intelligence program will teach students how to utilize artificial intelligence in their chosen career paths.

According to an article on the University of Mount Union’s website, Sandra Madar, the associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of undergraduate studies, said of the two new additions, "Like the computer itself, AI is quickly becoming the key tool for increasing human productivity. We are pleased to offer these important new opportunities for students across all majors. Our faculty are in tune to the rapidly evolving needs of industries and will continue to innovate curricula in response.”

The Artificial Intelligence minor will prepare students to specialize in artificial intelligence as a major part of their career. The program will teach students how to work with AI in a technical sense, as well as discuss the ethics of artificial intelligence. The minor is intended to be paired with majors such as computer engineering, data science, and software development.

Alternatively, the Applied Artificial Intelligence minor is a more accessible way to learn about artificial intelligence and its applications and usages in a variety of fields and industries. Students won’t need to have any experience with computer programming in order to succeed in the program, and instead will learn how to use and work with AI as a supplemental resource in their chosen career paths.

William Cunion, who serves as the school’s vice president for academic affairs, said, “Artificial intelligence is already changing the way that people live and work across the globe, and we are excited and confident that Mount Union is taking bold steps to become leaders in this emerging field. We anticipate that we will attract students who recognize the career potential in developing AI proficiency in a variety of fields, as well as improving connections with community partners who are looking to upskill their workforce.”
