University of Southern Indiana to host healthcare conference

A conference focusing on evidence-based practice in healthcare is coming to the University of Southern Indiana's campus on April 17, and the keynote speaker may be a familiar face to some in the University of Southern Indiana community. 

According to an article on the University of Southern Indiana’s website, Dr. Anita Hagan, who is the Interim Director of the Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning, is quoted as saying of the conference’s keynote speaker, Dr. Maria R. Shirey, “We are excited to welcome Dr. Shirey back to USI. She is well-known nationally as an author, editor, speaker and for her research on leadership science and health services outcomes across the healthcare continuum.”

Dr. Shirey has had a storied career, including spending time on the Nursing faculty at the University of Southern Indiana. Currently, Dr. Shirey is the Dean and Fay B. Ireland Endowed Chair in Nursing at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing. She is also the Director of the UAB’s Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Collaborating Centre for International Nursing. Dr. Shirey has also earned awards and recognitions for her contributions to nursing and healthcare.

The conference will serve as an opportunity for those in varied healthcare careers like nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, and administration to present their research, listen to panels and presentations, and receive continuing education hours. The focus of the conference is using evidence-based practice to improve healthcare outcomes.
