Siena Heights University is working to combat “brain drain” with its new Brain Gain Promise
Students hailing from Lenawee County will receive a “tuition-free guarantee” under this newly announced project.
Siena Heights University has announced its Brain Gain Promise, the university’s attempt to help reverse “brain drain.” The Brain Gain Promise promises free tuition to students who come from high schools in Lenawee County whose families make less than $65,000 a year, and significantly reduced tuition for students whose families make less than $80,000 a year.
According to an article on Siena Heights University’s website, Dr. Douglas Palmer, who serves as the university’s president, was quoted as saying of the new program, “Accessibility and choice are important factors of Brain Gain. Students should have the opportunity to choose the school that is right for them, regardless of their financial background. With greater access to educational facilities, resources, and funding through opportunities like our Brain Gain Promise, students are more likely to stay in-state and help Michigan flourish.”
The hope is that this program will encourage more students to get degrees locally and for more graduates to stay and work in the local communities to bolster the economic prosperity and the workforce of the area.
In addition to needing to come from Lenawee County, students must also complete the FAFSA and be enrolled full time to be eligible for the Brain Gain Program.
