Somerset Community College students provide holiday gifts and spa services to the community

The Cosmetology program students chose causes to help out with the $10,000 they collected through their annual Christmas fundraiser.

Students from three campuses of Somerset Community College's Cosmetology program raised $10,000 in their Christmas fundraiser and then each campus selected causes to benefit from the collected funds: providing Christmas gifts for Rockcastle County High School students who may not otherwise have any, sponsoring children from Clinton County Elementary School for a special day of holiday fun, and providing spa services to women who are in recovery at Lake Cumberland Recovery and Sky Hope.

According to an article on Somerset Community College’s website, Brandy Brock, who is the Cosmetology Program Coordinator, said, “Giving back to the community is one of my passions, and I feel that exposing my Cosmetology students to this type of community service is a life-changing experience.”

Students from the Laurel campus provided myriad items for students in need at Rockcastle County High School. The selected students received clothes, food, blankets, and hygiene products. The students were also able to ask for specific items they wanted to receive.

The Clinton Center campus Cosmetology students selected nine kids from Clinton County Elementary School to spend a day with them that included movies, crafts, and a visit from Santa Claus.

Cosmetology students from the Somerset campus chose to provide spa services for women at Lake Cumberland Recovery and Sky Hope. The women were able to enjoy haircuts, manicures and pedicures, and facials, along with gifts and food. One woman who was treated to these services later sent a card thanking the cosmetology students for their kindness. The card read, “Thank you, you were all so kind. You all made me feel like I was normal and cared for. The food was great! The haircut was awesome. At a time in my life when I feel less than, you all made me feel good. Thank you for all the gifts from someone who doesn’t have anyone. I’m greatly appreciative.”
