Support for STEM students at Ohio Northern University comes from State of Ohio grant

The Ohio Department of Higher Education has awarded Ohio Northern University funds through its Choose Ohio First grant.

Thanks to a grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, Ohio Northern University will have the funds to better support its students who are pursuing education in STEM fields. Nearly $2 million has been given to the school per the Choose Ohio First grant, which aims to help develop STEM talent within the state.

According to an article on Ohio Northern University’s website, scholarships that are awarded to STEM students through the grant are not the only form of support the students receive. Lynda Nyce, who is the director of student success and the assistant provost for academic affairs, said of this additional support, “Experiential and work-based learning are key, particularly in STEM fields. Our strategic partnerships with employers throughout the region give students job-ready experience through internships, co-ops, and community-based research. Our graduates leave with the talent and skills Ohio’s businesses and industries need.”

The president of Ohio Northern University, Melissa J. Baumann, Ph.D, expressed her gratitude for the financial support from Choose Ohio First, saying, “Choose Ohio First provides significant support to many of our STEM students. It can be a difference maker in helping them complete their degrees. We’re thankful for the state’s continued support and this affirmation of the quality and value of an ONU education.”

The students who will benefit from the grant funding include those in mathematics, neuroscience, electrical engineering, pharmacy, nursing, and more.

Chancellor Randy Gardner of the Ohio Department of Higher Education said, "The strength of Ohio's economy depends on having a skilled workforce in the STEM fields. Ohio Northern University has done a great job of preparing its STEM scholars, and I am pleased to have Ohio Northern University among the latest Choose Ohio First awardees."

To date, the DeWine-Husted administration has given more than $200 million in support of STEM education in the state.
