Wrestling coach from Cleary University recognized for commitment by the National Wrestling Coaches Association

Matt Santos has been coaching at Cleary University since June 2022.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association has recognized Cleary University wrestling coach Matt Santos for his commitment and his success in his coaching efforts.

According to an article on Cleary University’s website, Michael Moyer, who serves as the executive director of the NWCA, said Santos was recognized by the association due to “his commitment to preparing wrestlers for professional success after graduation from college.”

Wrestlers in Business Network is a division of the National Wrestling Coaches Association designed to provide student wrestlers with opportunities for internships and jobs as well as general career advice. Coach Santos has been taking advantage of the opportunities the Wrestlers in Business Network provides by having his wrestlers attend career fairs, meet with representatives from companies in order to talk about internships and job openings, and set up accounts to have their resumes reviewed.

The Wrestlers in Business Network is important to the National Wrestling Coaches Association because it wants wrestlers to be set up for future success, according to Moyer. He added, “The NWCA strives to prepare our student athletes for future success by making access available to transformational experiences prior to graduation to enhance their life’s journey. Through Coach Santos’ care and effort, the Cleary University wrestling program is providing a supplemental gateway to career exploration. We deeply appreciate Coach Santos’ support of WIBN and the career and internship fair, and want to publicly acknowledge his commitment to align the wrestling programs with the educational mission of Cleary.”

Santos discussed his reasons for participating so heavily in the WIBN, saying, “These companies that are part of WIBN want to hire wrestlers specifically. This gives student wrestlers an advantage in the job market. My role is to provide guidance and support for my guys so they have the necessary information to begin planning for their future and take an important step toward a great career.”

Santos himself was a wrestler at Michigan State University from 2016 to 2022. He earned an honor award and a commitment award while a wrestler there. As a coach, he worked with the Northern Elite club team and was a Team USA World Team trials coach before joining Cleary University in June 2022.

“I am a high-level thinker,” Santos said. “The goal I set for my team is to work toward a national title, one small step at a time, one workout at a time. I encourage my wrestlers to become the best version of themselves – the best wrestler, the best student, the best person; and to be prepared for the next level of their life. Each wrestler has the potential to be number one; to believe in it and to believe in themselves.”
