Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity awards grant to Mott Community College

Mott Community College was recently given $156,000 for a new initiative aimed at providing enhanced services to immigrant and international students. 

In an article on Mott Community College’s website, Dr. Michelle A. Nelson, who serves as the Assistant Vice President for Student Success Services at MCC, was quoted speaking about the grant, saying, "Mott Community College is thrilled to introduce the 'Pathways to Success: Empowering Immigrant Futures' initiative, a comprehensive project committed to creating a nurturing environment for immigrant, refugee, and first-generation students. This initiative includes strategic outreach, community partnerships, sustainable resource initiatives, and crucial support services, all with the goal of empowering students and facilitating a smooth transition into education and training for the immigrant communities in the Greater Flint area."

The funds were received from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Sixty by 30 and the Michigan College Access Network as part of a larger effort of providing $1.5 million for Student and Immigrant Success Grants. Each school receiving these funds has demonstrated its effort and commitment toward increasing positive college experiences and completion for immigrants, first-generation, and international students.

Four areas of focus are at the foundation of the Empowering Immigrant Futures initiative at Mott Community College: Empowering Ethnic Community Partnerships, Becoming a Trusted Connector, Accelerating Immigrant Career and Educational Success, and Institutional Advancement and Relationship Building.
