Spanish for Health Professionals will give those in the healthcare field, or those pursuing a career in it, the opportunity to learn Spanish, which will be beneficial in communication with patients.
Dr. Ramon Muniz is teaching Spanish for Health Professionals at Owensboro Community and Technical College, a new course offering for the school. Dr. Muniz is a Spanish instructor at OCTC and is looking forward to helping health professionals broaden their Spanish language skills.
In an article on Owensboro Community and Technical College’s website, Dr. Muniz is quoted as saying, "I like teaching about language and culture, while at the same time, I can help break down boundaries and walls. This course will help healthcare professionals be able to relate and communicate to Spanish-speaking cultures."
The hybrid-format class is a three-credit-hour course that meets on Wednesdays from 2pm to 3:4pm. Students in the class will be taught Spanish through the lens of healthcare, including terminology, grammar, and diagnosis vocabulary.
The course does come with some prerequisites: either prior Spanish college education or equivalent experience, or prior knowledge of medical terminology.
Dr. Scott Williams, president of Owensboro Community and Technical College, is hopeful that the course will be useful for current and future healthcare professionals: “We are proud to be able to offer this course, and we hope this course will attract current nursing students as well as those healthcare professionals who are already employed in the field.”
