‘Reflections on Culture & Self’ will be on display at multiple venues on Morehead State University’s campus throughout the month.
Students at Morehead State University will have their artwork displayed throughout the campus in the school’s ‘Reflections on Culture & Self’ exhibition this month. The exhibition will be populated with the work of student artists who are currently taking art classes. Not all of the students featured are art majors, but all of the talented students are enrolled in Ceramics or Painting courses.
The art exhibition came to fruition as a partnership between Morehead State University's Diversity and Inclusion team and the Department of Communication, Media, Art & Design. The Diversity and Inclusion team is always seeking opportunities to display belonging on the campus, and a visual representation of such will allow the student artists to display their work that follows the theme of culture and self.
Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics Quinn Maher selected student artwork from their Ceramics class to be viewed in the Adron Doran University Center. The prompts for the Ceramics students included “replication” and “historical vs. contemporary.”
In the Camden-Carroll Library Diversity Gallery, artwork by students from Professor of Art Gary Mesa-Gaido's Painting classes will be available to view. His students were given the task of creating paintings that represent “the self.”
In an article on Morehead State University’s website, Dr. Caroline Atkins, who serves as the school’s chief diversity officer, discussed the purpose of the art exhibition, and what the Diversity and Inclusion team intends to happen via the event: “For some time, the Eagle Diversity and Inclusion Team has been interested in promoting creativity through the arts as one of our many efforts to further conversations related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This exhibition will do just that. We are grateful for the leadership of the Department of Communication, Music, Art and Design and we look forward to seeing the creativity and imagination of our MSU students.”
‘Reflections on Culture & Self’ will be displayed on campus through October 27. On October 11 at 3pm in the Diversity Gallery there will be a reception for the event.
