National League for Nursing awards Galen College of Nursing with Center of Excellence designation

The National League for Nursing named Galen College of Nursing, and only eight other institutions, with the Center of Excellence in Nursing Education, an honor only 10% of institutions nationwide have achieved.

Galen College of Nursing is one of nine nursing education programs in America to be named a 2023 National League for Nursing Center of Excellence.

Galen College of Nursing is a single purpose nursing college that aims to increase access to quality nursing education for all students. The school was recognized as a Center of Excellence under the ‘Promote the pedagogical expertise of faculty’ designation along with Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, and MGH Institute of Health Professions.

In an article posted on Galen College’s website, Executive Vice President, Teaching & Learning Innovation at Galen, Dr. Tracy A. Ortelli, Ph.D., RN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN, talked about the prestige that comes along with being named a Center of Excellence, saying, “There is no higher honor than to be recognized by the National League of Nursing as a Center of Excellence. At Galen, our mission is not just words on paper—they are foundational to our shared vision for all activities related to teaching, learning, and student-centered support. Galen strives to promote a culture of opportunity without barriers, using innovative approaches to deliver quality education with an authentic, caring approach to educating the future nursing workforce.”

The National League for Nursing Center of Excellence in Nursing Education designation was created for nursing schools and healthcare organizations that have attained a high level of excellence in a specific area. The program acknowledges, through public recognition, the sustainability of excellence, commitment, and outstanding innovations the organizations have managed to achieve. The first Center of Excellence designations were awarded back in 2004 to the School of Nursing, and the first destinations for healthcare organizations were handed out back in 2012. As it stands now, fewer than 10% of nursing institutions currently hold the National League for Nursing Center of Excellence in Nursing Education designation.

Mark Vogt, who serves as Galen College’s Chief Executive Officer, said of the designation, “Achieving this designation is a significant milestone for Galen and is further validation of the sustained and outstanding work performed by our talented academic community. This is a reflection of a culture that supports a shared vision for teaching excellence, student advisement, and curriculum development. This vision helps create a sense of identity, promotes unity, and establishes exemplary standards for faculty that will usher in the next generation of competent and compassionate nurses.”

The college will be formally recognized during the 2023 NLN Education Summit during the Honors Convocation on Saturday, September 30.
