Ivy Tech Community College and Hanover College have created the 1+2+1 Model which allows students to attend both schools as they work toward both associate and bachelor degrees in nursing.
Ivy Tech Community College has recently announced its partnership with Hanover College to run a first-of-its-kind nursing program partnership. The partnership is called the 1+2+1 Model, and will allow Hanover College students the opportunity to earn their associate of science degree in Nursing at Ivy Tech Madison, while simultaneously earning credits toward their bachelor of science degree in Nursing at Hanover.
The model will allow students to enroll at Hanover College to take general education core classes for their first year. In their second and third years at Hanover, students will become dual enrolled at Ivy Tech Madison where they will take nursing classes and earn their associate of science in Nursing. Students will then be back at Hanover for their fourth and final year, where they will finish their undergraduate studies, earning a bachelor of science in Nursing. Students who enroll in this partnership program will live on the campus at Hanover College for the duration of their four years, allowing them the ability to fully participate in campus life there.
In an article on Ivy Tech Community College’s website, Ivy Tech Madison’s Chancellor Dr. Amanda Harsin was quoted as saying, “This model is the first of its kind in Indiana. We are proud of the innovation, and we applaud Hanover College collaborating with us and for building a path for students to use our premier faculty and facilities.”
Hanover College’s President Lake Lambert was also quoted on the partnership: “For years, Ivy Tech-Madison has been an important partner for Hanover College and our community, and we are excited to again be charting a new course together. This partnership will transform nursing education in our region and will create tremendous opportunities for our students in the future,” said Lambert.
Prospective students are invited to join this nursing pathway at Hanover College starting in the fall semester which begins this August. Students who begin their path in the coming semester will earn their associate of science degree in Nursing by 2026 and will be able to join the workforce in the local community while they finish their bachelor’s degree.
Ivy Tech Community College and Hanover College have been partnering to prepare students in the healthcare industry since 2019. It was then that Hanover College and Ivy Tech Madison teamed up to prepare Hanover students to take the Certified Nursing Assistant state licensure exam. Every May since then, Ivy Tech has assisted in the preparation of ten Hanover College students for the state licensure exam and provided them with opportunities in gaining patient contact hours for health sciences graduate programs.
Over the years, the collaboration between the two schools has increased interest in the nursing program from students. Talks about the ASN to BSN partnership between Ivy Tech and Hanover began in the summer of 2021. Because of conversations between the schools and the community, the two schools approved the Higher Learning Commision visit that resulted in the commission providing the needed approval to make the 1+2+1 Model possible when it was approved this February at the Institutional Actions Council meeting.
