The Chancellor Scholarship at Oakland Community College is open for applications through the end of March for graduating high school students, and will pay for the first year of school at OCC.
Select Oakland County 2023 high school seniors and graduates of adult and alternative education programs will have the opportunity to be awarded up to $200,000 from Oakland Community College through its annual Chancellor Scholarship.
The Chancellor Scholarship is an annual award that offers full fees and tuition for the recipient’s first academic year at Oakland Community College.
Erin Leahy of Royal Oak was a previous recipient of the Chancellor Scholarship. The award gave her the chance to take a wider variety of classes and explore more areas of interest and gain credits toward her degree.
In an article on Oakland Community College’s website, Leahy talked about that experience, saying, “Generous only begins to describe OCC's Chancellor's Scholarship. I really am incredibly grateful for it and would highly encourage high school seniors to seriously consider OCC and look into this scholarship.”
Currently, Leahy is in her fourth semester at Oakland Community College, and is planning to study computer science before transferring to the University of Detroit Mercy.
Oakland Community College’s Chancellor Peter Provenzano talked about the scholarship, saying, “We are proud to offer this award to 50 recipients across Oakland County each year. We know it helps ease financial strains for individuals as they pursue their dreams through higher education. As a former college scholarship recipient, I know first-hand the difference these awards can make.”
Karen Johnson, who serves as the Financial Aid Advisor at Oakland Community College, talked about how the recipients of the Chancellor Scholarship are part of a fortunate group of students, saying that the “scholarship recipients are winners both financially and academically.”
Students hoping to apply for the Chancellor Scholarship have to be a high school senior who is graduating from a charter school, private school, home school, or public program within Oakland County, and have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Alternative public, private, or adult students graduating high school in Oakland County can qualify with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
Recipients of the award will get $2,000 for the fall semester and $2,000 for the winter semester, with a total of $200,000 in awarded money across all recipients. Recipients have to then attend Oakland Community College at least full time, for a minimum of 12 credit hours, during both the fall and winter semester. The recipients cannot renew the scholarship, and can only apply during their first year of higher education after graduating high school.
Hopeful students have until March 31, 2023 to apply, and more information about the scholarship can be found at Oakland Community College’s scholarship webpage.
