Three LGBTQ*-focused scholarships open for applications at the University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky, in collaboration with its Office of LGBTQ* Resources and Office for Student Success, have opened up three scholarships: the Tuesday Meadows Endowed Scholarship, the David Mundry Memorial Scholarship, and a UK Office of LGBTQ* Resources Scholarship.
The Office of LGBTQ* Resources at the University of Kentucky, which is housed within the Office for Student Success, has opened its application period for three different student scholarships: The Tuesday Meadows Endowed Scholarship, The David Mundry Memorial Scholarship, and the UK Office of LGBTQ* Resources Scholarship. All three scholarships are available to students to apply through BBNvolved.
J’Lissabeth Faughn, who serves as the director of the Office of LGBTQ* Resources was quoted in an article on the school’s website about how the current need for the presence of LGBTQ people in higher education is more important than ever, as is enabling students to get the education they might otherwise not have access to, saying, “By creating access to scholarships and other financial opportunities, LGBTQ individuals can better shape cultural progress. Unfortunately, so many of our queer scholars, and I do mean our scholars here at UK, have very little or no contact or financial support from their families, and many of our scholars are legally emancipated from their parents, due to the discrimination they faced at home.”
Applications for all three of the scholarships close at the end of February.
The Tuesday Meadows Endowed Scholarship is named after University of Kentucky alumna Tuesday Meadows who grew up in Louisville, Kentucky as one of six children. Meadows earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1977, and is still involved in the university community, including the Office of LGBTQ* Resources. More information about Meadows can be seen as part of the OutSouth Oral History Project, showing in the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History in the University of Kentucky Libraries. That project is in partnership with UK LGBTQ* Resources. The scholarship will award $1,000 to the chosen student.
Students interested in the scholarship will need a letter of recommendation, a resume, and to provide their contact information as well as answer five short essay questions.

The David Mundry Memorial Scholarship is in memory of David Mundry who was an advocate for LGBTQ* people. Mundry was a lover of dogs, a diehard fan of Nintendo, and aspiring drag queen. Mundry did his best to lift others in their lowest moments, and was one of the most kind, supportive, and loving people those who knew him had ever met. The University of Kentucky community misses him dearly. The David Mundry Memorial Scholarship was created with the goal of carrying on David’s legacy, to honor his life, and to remember him by using his name to help younger members of the UK LGBTQ* community. When David was a student at UK, he worked at the university bookstore where he learned how many students had a difficult time paying for their books and other course materials. He would often do what he could to help those students who were struggling, and so this scholarship was created in the same spirit. The winner of the David Mundry Memorial Scholarship will be awarded $500.
Students applying for the David Mundry Memorial Scholarship will need to provide contact information, a resume, a letter of recommendation, a statement of financial need related to books or other course materials, and answer some summary questions and provide a short statement.

The UK Office of LGBTQ* Resources Scholarship is available to students who are currently enrolled full time. There are multiple awards available for this scholarship, and will be made to help with the cost of books, room and board, tuition, study abroad expenses, and other costs related to the academic pursuits of the student at the University of Kentucky. The awards are funded by gifts given to the UK LGBTQ* Endowment Scholarship Fund which was originally created by Keisa and Amanda Fallin-Bennett, who are two alums dedicated to empowering the success of students at UK. The fund’s goal is to support UK students who are working toward completing their degree at the University of Kentucky. The multiple awards will be for a total of $2,000 each on a one time basis.

The Office of LGBTQ* Resources at the University of Kentucky is located at the Dinkle-Mas Suite in the Gatton Student Center on campus.
