For third year running Huntington Junior College freezes tuition

Huntington Junior College announced that it will not be raising tuition rates for the third year in a row in an effort to keep the cost of higher education affordable for more students.

Huntington Junior College has been around since 1936, and is located in downtown Huntington, West Virginia. While the prices of groceries and gas may be increasing, the mainstay of the area has announced that for the third year in a row, it will not be raising tuition rates.

The school is in the top six medical assistant and dental schools in the state. It offers not only healthcare training, but business management programs, substance abuse counseling assistant programs, and more.

Chief Academic Officer at Huntington Junior College, Kiko Suarez, was quoted by the Herald Dispatch on the school’s decision to continue freezing tuition: “HJC is holding tuition steady in an effort to make a college education affordable for our students.”

According to the Education Data Initiative, tuition at two year colleges have, without taking inflation into account, risen by more than 11%.

Another Huntington institution, Marshall University, also announced that its board of governors voted to keep the tuition rates the same, as well, with a small increase in some fees for select students.

Huntington Junior College has also promised to reduce the required number of credit hours for an associate’s degree next year. This decision was recommended by the school’s accrediting agency, The Higher Learning Commission.

Suarez again spoke on the decision, saying, “These two steps will help students graduate in two years at an affordable rate.”

The fall quarter is currently in progress at Huntington Junior College, while the winter quarter is set to begin in January of next year. Students who are interested in the school can find more information at its website.
