Lilly Endowment Inc. gives Vincennes University $1 million in grant money to expand pre-college programming

Lilly Endowment Inc. has given Vincennes University a $1 million grant as part of its Indiana Youth Programs on Campus initiative. The funding will be for Vincennes University to expand its multi-day summer curriculum for pre-college students.

Lilly Endowment Inc., an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation, has awarded a $1 million grant to Vincennes University as part of its Indiana Youth Programs on Campus initiative.

The money will be used by Vincennes University to expand some of their summer programs, like the Summer STEM Academy, Techmaster, and Jobs for America’s Graduates. Shorter summer camps for 7th through 12th grade students will also be funded with some of the grant money. These camps are all hosted on Vincennes University campuses.

Dr. Chuck Johnson, president of Vincennes University, was quoted in a press release talking about the importance of the grant and partnership with Lilly Endowments: “Vincennes University is proud to be a part of this Lilly Endowment initiative in Indiana to increase the number of high school students pursuing post-secondary education. VU will use this generous support from the Lilly Endowment over the next three years to bring more K-12 students to our campuses than any other time in VU history. Through these efforts, students will engage our outstanding faculty and staff and will learn about the many career paths that exist in Indiana and the education and training required to pursue them at VU and among our sister institutions."

After a large drop in the number of Indiana-based students getting education beyond high school degrees, Lilly Endowment started the Indiana Youth Programs on Campus initiative to encourage younger students to continue with their education. In addition to funding programs that encourage students to go to college, the Indiana Youth Programs on Campus initiative also aims to help schools improve their recruitment techniques, focusing on students who have traditionally been looked over by higher education.

Vincennes University offers a variety of majors across many disciplines, offers in-person as well as online classes, and has majors available on military education sites.
