Hazard Community and Technical College is offering a new nursing program initiative that could lead to free tuition in an attempt to combat Kentucky’s nursing shortage.
A new initiative at Hazard Community and Technical College called 4FreeNursing at HCTC is offering a chance for nursing students to get free tuition.
President and CEO of HCTC Dr. Jennifer Lindon cited the need for more nurses in Kentucky as the reason for the initiative in an interview with WYMT: “We are doing all we can to address the critical shortage of nurses across the state.”
According to Lindon, students must complete four prerequisite classes: Mat 146 (Contemporary College Math), PSY 110 (General Psychology), BIO 137 (Human Anatomy and Physics 1 with Lab), and NAA 100 (Nursing Assistant Skills 1). A full list of classes offered at Hazard Community and Technical College can be found here.
In addition to the prerequisite classes, interested students can also apply to the nursing program (which does not accept all applicants), attend a Nursing Pre-Admission Conference, and apply for scholarships such as the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship. Lindon noted that grants and scholarships such as the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship could cover the cost of the prerequisite classes, which are not covered by the 4FreeNursing at HCTC initiative.
Lindon also noted that the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship “is not income-based, so as long as you are otherwise eligible for Title IV aid and you do not already have a degree, most likely you will be eligible for that Work Ready Scholarship.”
High school students are eligible for the four prerequisite classes, allowing them to potentially be able to enroll in the 4FreeNursing program sooner.
The RN program deadline for the upcoming fall semester is April 15.
