East Tennessee State University welcomes record-breaking freshman class
The university recently welcomed the largest freshman class in its history, with 2,288 students starting in the Fall 2026 semester.
East Tennessee State University welcomed a record-breaking 2,288 students into its Fall 2026 freshman class. This is the largest freshman class in the university’s history, and the university broke another record at the start of the semester, as well. Its first-year retention rates rose to 78.4%, which is the highest in its history, as well.
According to an article on East Tennessee State University’s website, university president Dr. Brian Noland was quoted as saying of the record-breaking freshman class, “At a time when students and families are carefully considering the value of higher education, more first-year students than ever are choosing ETSU. Our strong enrollment and this historic freshman class reflect the trust students and families place in ETSU to provide an exceptional academic experience, and an accessible, affordable educational pathway that supports students along their journey to a college degree.”
Dr. Joe Sherlin, the senior vice president for Student Life and Enrollment, echoed these sentiments, saying, “This historic class and the recognitions we have earned for affordability and student outcomes reflect the incredible work of our faculty and staff, who are committed to creating opportunities for students. We are excited for the year ahead and the impact our students will make on campus and beyond.”
The university’s total enrollment for the Fall 2026 semester was 14,506 students, which is 118 more students than the Fall 2025 semester.
As the university grows, it is adding to its campus to accommodate the rising population. In August 2026, it opened the new Academic Building to provide more space for teaching, learning, and collaboration. It also recently opened the Mary V. Jordan Center, which is a hub for student support services to make sure students in all steps of their college education journey have access to the resources they need to succeed.
East Tennessee State University notes that half of its graduates leave the university with no student loan debt, highlighting its commitment to affordability and student success.
