Somerset Community College breaks ground on new Technical Building

Ground has been broken for the new Technical Building on Somerset Community College's Laurel Campus. The $36 million facility will become a central hub for technical education, sitting on the former site of the Interstate Coal Company. It will represent the evolution of the state’s economy and will be in part funded by a $6 million Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) grant.

According to an article on Somerset Community College’s website, Dr. Carey Castle, SCC Chancellor, was quoted as saying of the groundbreaking, “This groundbreaking cements SCC’s commitment to this region and to creating opportunities for the students and families who call it home. We are grateful to the legislators and community partners who believed in this project and invested in its future. Seeing so many members of the community and our local leaders come together to celebrate this milestone was incredibly meaningful. This investment is ultimately an investment in our students, our workforce and the future success of this region.”

The new facility is expected to strengthen workforce development opportunities and shape the future of the region. It will provide students with hands-on opportunities with local employers, and will strengthen the college’s partnerships with local industry leaders. The programs that will be housed in the new Technical Building include Advanced Manufacturing, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Construction Technology, HVAC, Welding, Automotive, Diesel, and Electrical/Electronic Technology. 

Senator Brandon Storm said, “This new building is about creating opportunities, strengthening our workforce and helping more Kentuckians build successful futures here at home. I was proud to support the General Assembly's investment in a project that will benefit our students, employers and the entire region. To the educators who will teach here, the students who will build their careers here, and the community that will benefit for generations to come. This milestone belongs to you.”

The AMLER that is helping to support the project’s development will purchase tools, equipment, and technology for the new building that will prepare students for careers in today’s technical workplaces.

It is about making sure every Kentuckian has access to the education and training that matches their goals and the needs of the communities where they live. That is exactly what this project represents. Somerset Community College is transforming its Laurel Campus into a new Technical Building, creating a centralized hub for technical education and workforce development right here in Laurel County.”
