West Liberty University receives grant from West Virginia’s Nursing Workforce Expansion Program

The university has been awarded $255,788 to improve and expand its nursing program to train and retain qualified nurses who will work in West Virginia.

West Liberty University has received a $255,788 grant from West Virginia’s Nursing Workforce Expansion Program. The program was established in 2022 to help alleviate the state’s ongoing nursing shortage by helping education institutions across the state expand their nursing programs and bring in more students.

According to an article on West Liberty University’s website, Kimberly Crow, who is an instructor of Nursing and a Co-Principal Investigator on the Nursing Expansion Grant, was quoted as saying of the grant funding, “The Department of Nursing is very excited to receive continued funding to recruit students into our accelerated and traditional programs to support the growing nursing workforce needs in West Virginia. As a result of this funding, students will be more prepared to provide high quality nursing care to their community.”

The Department of Nursing expects to use the grant funding to make improvements and enhancements to both its traditional and accelerated nursing programs that will allow the programs to accommodate up to 20 new students between both types of nursing program. The department plans to focus on student success initiatives that will better prepare students for the NCLEX, which grants students their nursing license.

West Virginia’s Nursing Workforce Expansion Program is funded via the West Virginia Legislature and is administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and Community and Technical College System. Since the program launched three years ago, nursing program enrollment across the state has increased by almost 25%.
