Baldwin Wallace University introduces STEAM education certificate program

The program will be free for Ohio residents thanks to Choose Ohio First funding.

Baldwin Wallace University has introduced a new STEAM education certificate program designed to help teachers, librarians, and other community members learn how to teach STEAM topics effectively. Thanks to funding awarded to the university via the Choose Ohio First program, the STEAM education certificate program will be free for residents of the state of Ohio.

According to an article on Baldwin Wallace University’s website, Lauren Scotta, a lecturer at the university, was quoted as saying of the new program, "BW's commitment to a holistic, interdisciplinary approach allows participants to explore how these fields work together to create innovative solutions. Students will benefit from working in cross-disciplinary teams — collaborating with peers from diverse academic backgrounds to bring fresh perspectives to problem-solving. This environment not only enhances creativity but also cultivates practical skills for addressing complex, real-world challenges.”

The STEAM education certificate program is for teachers, librarians, and community educators who have a bachelor’s degree. It will focus on creative and collaborative ways to introduce STEAM concepts into classrooms and other community spaces. The program is delivered in a hybrid format and will provide participants with nine credits they can use toward professional development requirements, teaching licensure renewal, or salary advancement.

Scotta said, "By integrating arts-driven approaches, participants will engage in problem-solving that taps into both analytical and creative thinking. The addition of the arts to STEM to form STEAM is crucial for enhancing problem-solving and critical thinking. The arts bring creativity, imagination and emotional insight to the process, which complement the logical, analytical aspects of STEM disciplines. By integrating the arts, learners are encouraged to think divergently, envisioning a variety of possible solutions rather than settling for the first idea that comes to mind.”

There are two upcoming cohorts for the program, one which begins on June 2 and one which begins on October 22.
