The machine is property of Eagle Nutrition Services at Eastern Michigan University and is available to students, staff, and the general community for information about their body composition measurements.
Eastern Michigan University’s Eagle Nutrition Services has debuted its new DEXA Machine for use by the campus and surrounding community. A DEXA Machine provides the most accurate scans of the patient’s body composition and will help nutrition students gain insight into these statistics as part of a hands-on learning experience, and will help anyone who wishes to use the machine to learn more about their body.
According to an article on Eastern Michigan University’s website, Darlene Bellers, who serves as the clinic director for Eagle Nutrition Services, was quoted as saying of the benefits of obtaining the new machine, “We are incredibly grateful to the Provost’s Office for their support (of the DEXA machine). DEXA scans are typically only available in hospitals or clinical settings, making our clinic’s access to this technology truly special. It not only provides an accessible way for clients to monitor their body composition but also gives our students hands-on experience with a powerful diagnostic tool, preparing them for careers as registered dietitians.”
Dietetic students will be able to utilize the full capabilities of the machines in order to learn more about how they can best help individuals take control of their health. It will help them to prepare for their future careers in a meaningful, hands-on manner. Among the data the DEXA Machine can show users is fat distribution, bone mineral density, and the risk of developing metabolic disease. Students will be able to interpret the data and learn how to provide recommendations to patients based on the readings.
Eagle Nutrition Services provides nutrition education and counseling services and aims to help everyone who utilizes its services lead a healthy lifestyle. It is staffed by dietetic students and supervised by registered dieticians. Among the services it provides are cooking classes, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, DEXA scans, and nutrition counseling.
Anyone is welcome to come use the DEXA Machine at Eagle Nutrition Services, and no provider referral is necessary to take advantage. Students, staff, and other community members can make an appointment by calling 734-487-6572.
