A bachelor degree program has not been offered at the university’s College of Pharmacy in more than 25 years. This new program is available beginning in the Fall 2025 semester.
The University of Kentucky’s College of Pharmacy will be offering a bachelor degree program in the upcoming Fall 2025 semester, which has not happened in more than 25 years. The new Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program is an interdisciplinary program that will prepare students for a number of careers in the pharmacy field, including research, science, and healthcare.
According to an article on the University of Kentucky’s website, Eric Welch, Ph.D., who serves as the director of undergraduate studies at the university, explained the pathways that will be available to students upon completing this unique program. Welch is quoted as saying, “What makes the BSPS program stand out is its focus on real-world experiences and workforce readiness. Students will have the opportunity to engage in groundbreaking scholarship, gain experience in clinical and research settings and work alongside experts in the field. Whether they pursue immediate employment or continue their education in advanced programs, this degree positions them to make meaningful contributions to science and health care.”
The new program’s webpage explains that it is a good starting point for individuals who are interested in science or non-patient-care aspects of healthcare. Students who choose to pursue this degree program will “gain a strong foundation in the basic sciences—chemistry, biology, and physiology—and explore specialized topics in drug development, medicinal chemistry, and health outcomes research.” The program page also mentions that students can use this degree as a starting point for a plethora of career or education advancement options, including moving on to medical, dental, pharmacy, or veterinary school, or working in clinical trial management or pharmaceutical research.
Dean R. Kip Guy, Ph.D., said of the new program, “This is a historic milestone for our college and the university. The BSPS program brings undergraduate students a curriculum focused on turning scientific passion into real-world innovation, the chance to work with world-class mentors and access to cutting-edge facilities. It’s designed for students who want to make a difference — whether advancing groundbreaking research, driving pharmaceutical discovery or improving health care systems.”
Throughout the program, students will learn pharmacology, toxicology, medicinal chemistry, health systems analytics, and pharmaceutical development. Students will participate in internships and research projects in addition to their courses.
